SF Giants’ playoff hopes wilt away in sweep against D-backs

PHOENIX — With each passing game, the San Francisco Giants’ path to the postseason gets narrower. They have 10 to play, and with a 7-1 loss to the D-backs Wednesday afternoon, fell further out of the playoff picture than they have been since it was worth paying attention. They were swept in the two-game series, outscored 15-5 and outhit 27-9, sending them 4½ games back of Arizona, 3½ back of the Cubs for the third and final spot, and on the wrong side of tiebreakers against both teams in the unlikely scenario they come into play.“Obviously these were must-win games, and going back several games, those were also must-win games,” manager Gabe Kapler said. “Now, the math is not on our side.”If their four-game set at Colorado to open this road trip represented a golden opportunity, these two games in Arizona might as well have been a last stand. They went 1-5 over the six-game stretch and will take a .500 record with them to Dodger Stadium for the last leg o...Gun, extended magazine seized from Santa Cruz County students

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (KRON) -- A handgun with an extended magazine was brought onto a school bus by a Santa Cruz County student before it was found by a staff member, deputies said. The incident happened on Tuesday morning while students were riding a bus to Renaissance High School, an alternative school in the Pajaro Valley Unified School District. Several students began vaping in the back of the bus, prompting a staff member to escort the students off. "Shortly after being escorted off the bus by staff, one staff member believed someone from the group discarded something in a nearby bush. When staff went back to the area, they found the pictured handgun and extended magazine," the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office wrote. It's unclear if deputies have been able to figure out which student in the vaping group brought the weapon. The Sheriff's Office said it is "looking into the incident," and an investigation is ongoing. FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Self-inflicted mistakes have been a recurring theme during the Patriots’ 0-2 start to the season. As they prepare to hit the road for the first time on Sunday against the Jets, they are focusing on things big and small. That includes taking time to remind one of their most productive rookies on offense that there are still plenty of games left to play.Sixth-round pick Demario “Pop” Douglas was among New England’s biggest standouts during training camp, routinely hauling in sure-handed receptions despite his 5-foot-8 frame. It made his first-quarter fumble, which led to the Dolphins’ first touchdown during New England’s 24-17 loss to Miami last week, that much more surprising. It’s also why team veterans, including tight end Hunter Henry, made seeking out Douglas a priority when the team reconvened at the practice facility for the first time this week. Henry’s message?“I told him a similar story to me,” he said. It was 2016 and the third game of Henry’s rookie...Jets’ defense preparing to bounce back against Patriots’ ‘simple’ but effective offense

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Sauce Gardner has watched video of the New England Patriots’ offense and it seems easy to understand.Stopping it, however, is a different story. And that’s the upcoming task for a New York Jets defense looking to bounce back after a rough outing at Dallas last Sunday. “They don’t really have a complex offense,” Gardner said of the Patriots. “You know, it’s pretty simple for the quarterback to get, the gap scheme, everything is really like simple. But it’s like they excel at it, you know what I mean? What they try to do is get other people to mess up and make mistakes. “They just do everything right.”The Jets cornerback was complimenting the way Bill O’Brien’s offense executes the game plan, although using the word “simple” could rankle some around the Patriots’ facility. New England is 0-2, but has come down to the wire in season-opening losses to Philadelphia (25-20) and Miami (24-17).Mac Jones has thrown four touchdown ...Refugee who recently moved to Denver killed by carjackers

BRIGHTON, Colo. (AP) — The trial of two Aurora police officers opened Wednesday in the killing of Elijah McClain, a Black man put in a neck hold and injected with a powerful sedative whose 2019 death later became a rallying cry for nationwide protests and spurred police reform in Colorado. It's the first of several trials stemming from the death of McClain, and lawyers for the two sides are expected to paint contrasting pictures of the deadly struggle between the officers and the 23-year-old massage therapist. McClain was stopped by police in the city of Aurora while walking home from a convenience store carrying only a plastic bag and his phone. Man arrested in deadly double shooting on Welton Street One question jurors could be asked to decide is whether it was lawful for officers Randy Roedema and Jason Rosenblatt to detain and use force against McClain, who a 911 caller reported as suspicious. If prosecutors can convince jurors the stop was unjustified, that...Playoff-chasing Rangers hit 4 homers in a 15-5 win over Red Sox after trailing 4-0 early

The Tyngsboro daycare center employee charged with making pornographic photographs of the children in her care who fought to be released to live with her parents in New Hampshire has been ordered to remain in federal custody.U.S. Massachusetts District Court Chief Judge F. Dennis Saylor IV enumerated four compelling reasons to ensure Lindsay Groves, of Hudson, N.H., stay in federal custody: First, that the Grove’s “position of trust, and her alleged use of that position to physically exploit (minor victims), this factor weighs strongly in favor of detention.”“Second, there is substantial … evidence that defendant orchestrated and participated in the sexual exploitation of children under her care as a teacher. That evidence includes her own admissions to police officers that she had taken photographs of her students’ genitals, instructed them to remove their clothes, and sent those photographs to her codefendant,” Saylor wrote in his Wednesday order. The third point is a rebuttal of t...Latest news
