Borrowers who are buckling under the pressure of their federal student loans have a new option to significantly cut their payments, eventually by as much as half. The Biden administration’s new income-driven repayment plan known as SAVE opened for enrollment Tuesday, providing millions of borrowers with a more affordable way to pay their monthly student loan bills, which will become due again in October after a three-year pause.“With the SAVE plan, we are making a promise to every student,” Education Secretary Miguel Cardona said during a call with reporters Monday afternoon. “Your payments will be affordable. You’re not going to be buried under a mountain of interest and you won’t be saddled with a lifetime of debt.”In the coming days, more than 30 million borrowers will be invited to enroll in the new plan, initially proposed in January and which bases monthly payments on income and family size.Unlike the White House’s former plan to cancel up to $20,000 in federal debt — struck do...

Letters: Death threats to Trump and his son are as un-American as you can get

Threats are un-American actsRe: “Woman arrested on charges of emailing threats to shoot Trump and his son,” Aug. 22 news storyIt is appalling to me that people who call themselves American will send death threats to their fellow Americans because of their political views.People who will do that are definitely not patriotic Americans. They do not understand the meaning of the word and are unworthy of the name. They don’t know the history and the principles of our founding.James T Watson, Highlands RanchSpreading dangerous adviceIf this 82-year-old had taken the advice of a certain Colorado congresswoman, most likely I would not be alive to write this as hard as it is to see and write this letter. Telling folks not to get vaccinated or use masks kills — one way to get away with murder, in my opinion.I managed recently to run a 5K race in Evergreen. We had one friend fly in to run from out of state. It was wonderful to see her again and we carpooled to the race....

Strays is Adult Comedy, Doggie Style

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 06:43:52 GMT

Dog movies are usually heart-warming and delightful, but Strays is a dramatically different breed. This outlandishly vulgar satire is about as far from Marley and Me as Kansas is from Oz, with more F-bombs than any comedy you’ll see for a while. In the hands of Will Ferrell and Jamie Foxx, the genre has (literally) been unleashed, as the film follows crass pups wandering the streets, seemingly without a care in the world. Most dog movies begin with a pet getting lost and trying to find their owner, which leads to all sorts of ‘aw’-inducing moments along the way. As they gallop through golden fields, reminisce about their lives and make friends with local strays, you get a fuzzy feeling thinking about your own pets waiting for you at home. If you don’t have a pet, these movies might make you ponder the idea of buying one. Not Strays. Director Josh Greenbaum (Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar) follows the furry friend formula expertly with a big exception– the Border Terrier prot...

Where does San Jose State fit in conference realignment? In a secure place, for now

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 06:43:52 GMT

As two of the Bay Area’s major college football schools scramble for a home following the collapse of the Pac-12, the third sits back in reasonable comfort, watching the chaos unfold. Will San Jose State be OK once the last domino falls from this round of conference realignment?“Absolutely,” athletic director Jeff Konya said. There’s a scenario in which the Spartans are confronted by a dire future. But that moment is several chess moves away and may not ever materialize. Conference realignment is nothing if not fluid, vulnerable to forces unseen and unexpected.“If this were a question in 2014-16, during the acclimation period into the Mountain West,” Konya added, “I wouldn’t feel as strongly.”Since those lean years, the Spartans have made impressive strides on multiple fronts. The football program has two recent bowl appearances (2020 and 2022) under coach Brent Brennan. Men’s basketball just won 20 games under Tim Miles. The baseball and women’s soccer pr...
